Serafina Hager, Ph.D.

Director of the Georgetown University Italian Research Institute

Professor Hager was an Associate Professor and former Chair of the Italian Department at Georgetown University.  She was born in Italy and holds a bachelor degree from McGill University, a Master degree from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Irvine in Italian and French literature.  She has concentrated her scholarly interest in the intersection between Italian literature and the arts, with particular emphasis on humanism and Renaissance.

Professor Hager has divided her career at Georgetown between administration and teaching.  She was Associate Dean in the School of Languages and Linguistics, Curricular Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, and Special Assistant to the Provost for International Initiatives.  She started the Georgetown academic program at Villa Le Balze in Fiesole, Italy and organized major conferences in Fiesole and Florence such as the conference on “Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raffaello in Florence from 1500 to 1508”, and one on “America in the 21st Century: beyond Misunderstandings”. She edited and published the Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raffaello conference proceedings.  She created a special academic program, the Marino Academic Workshop, for incoming first-year students where students read a novel by a famous international writer and meet the author in early September.  She is active in many professional organizations in the US and Italy.  In 2013 she created the Georgetown University Italian Research Institute, housed in the College, to promote Italian contemporary scholarly research in a variety of fields and facilitate collaboration with non-Italian scholars and leaders. Professor Hager is the recipient of a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and of the Georgetown Alumni award.
